While you’re relaxing or playing in your backyard, make room for the birds. Here in the county where I live, last year 11 million birds were counted and 602 bird species were observed. The average backyard is visited regularly by 15 or more bird species.
More than 53 million North Americans currently participate in the hobby of backyard bird feeding! Backyard bird watching is both entertaining and educational (especially for children).
There’s a birdhouse for just about any bird that uses a house. Some resemble a human house and some birdhouses are so whimsical you have to wonder what a bird would think. From the very simple to the very ornate, a birdhouse can definitely liven up your backyard.
Likewise a bird bath can be entertaining. I haven’t had much luck watching the birds in a bird bath while I was outside, but have observed them frolicking in the water from the window.
Attract birds into your backyard with feeders. It won’t take long for one to discover the bird feeder and invite all its friends and relatives. I’ve had birds build nests in the hedges right up against the side of my house. But, be careful to not disturb them. Look, watch, listen, and learn.
Hummingbirds are especially fun to attract. Place a hummingbird feeder right outside a window and see if you can blink your eyes as fast as they flap their wings. Special hummingbird food is liquid as opposed to regular bird seed or sunflower seeds that larger birds find to be a delicacy.
