Ah, The Wonder of Flower and Vegetable Gardens

For years, I’ve enjoyed gardening. My parents were florists and I grew up with an abundance of flowers and tropical plants, some of which people have never even heard. Some plants were started from seed, some from air-layering, some plants were purchased young.

My mother was also a vegetarian, and so I was exposed to every kind of vegetable imaginable; and experimenting with various recipes was common.

Did you know you can eat marigold flowers? Nasturtium flowers? Squash blossoms? Elderberry blooms? Yes, you can. I’ve had them all battered and deep-fried.

At one time I lived near a zoo and picked up elephant dung to dig into the soil. My sweet potatoes were a foot long (no joke).

I used to pore over them in the colder months, chomping on the bit for the arrival of planting season.

If you don’t want to start your flower garden or vegetable garden from seed, then buy ready-to-plant seedlings. I used to adhere to the practice of planting more seed so the birds and/or squirrels will leave some behind to sprout. Keep that in mind.

The wonderful thing about bulbs is that they spread their tubers underground and multiply. With fertile soil, your daffodils and iris will give you years of pleasure without much work!

There’s nothing like having a bed of pansies in the colder months, only to be surrounded with brightly colored tulips in the spring. It’s a winning combination. Plant them together in the fall!
