Hot and Cold by Gail Gupton

After taking a break for the Christmas holidays, it's now a New Year and time to plan for the coming season.

In the winter a few years ago, my late husband and I took a trip to the Smoky Mountains where we rented a little cabin with a hot tub. It was so nice, we decided to create our very own hot tub in our back yard.

Since we didn't have a lot of money over and above the cost of the actual tub, we had to improvise the foundation by laying landscape timbers on the ground after we leveled a 12' x 12' area. Of course, we did have to hire an electrician to put in a separate circuit and outdoor outlet for the filtering system.

My husband built a little surround with 2x4's and then hung Bamboo Rollups for privacy. It was very cozy. The best thing around today is a 6 Foot Redwood Spa-N-A-Box hot tub. It's easy to install!!

This is the time of year to enjoy a hot tub!! Put it on your patio or porch - where ever it's level. There's nothing like soaking in hot water in the freezing cold. Your body will LOVE it!

If you haven't already done so, now is the time to place nesting boxes out for owls, woodpeckers, flickers and birds that might be staying all winter in your yard. This spring your yard may be home for some babies! Here's a Nest Box that allows you to watch the whole process from inside your window. Putting some reflective one-way film on the window will eliminate their seeing you.

Snowing where you are? Here's a nifty machine that will help you clear the path. And, while you're at it, wear some Heated Cargo Pants

There are so many ways to enjoy winter in the backyard. Keep kids close by with this great place to play - an inflatable snow bunker!! Insulated with PVC for backyard winter fun.

Don't forget to plan your vegetable garden layout during these dreary days. When the spring thaw comes, you'll be ready to plant.

Sit down and define the purpose of your backyard. One thing at a time. Consistency is the key to any success. So . . .define your purpose and then go for it . . . . Whatever your budget and time allows!

Happy backyarding.
